Education

Doing What’s Needed

Our educational program is designed with a specific focus on early education, as an essential building block for a child’s future success. We drew heavily on the Harlem Children’s Zone’s Pipeline of Success program and we adjusted some components to reflect the socioeconomic, cultural, and political context of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Hence, the mission of RWI Inc is to build school infrastructures, where all children can have access to quality education and benefit from extracurricular activities designed to boost their cognitive capacities.

Projects

We believe that in order to change the socioeconomic structure and the demography of rural areas in Africa, billions are not necessarily needed. Small changes, targeting the root causes of poverty can make a big difference. Providing good quality education to young children at younger age, giving communities access to clean water and basic healthcare services, while empowering them to organize themselves into rural cooperatives, would make a huge difference.

Education and health

One main reasons for rural poverty is that the population is scattered throughout small and isolated villages, often with no practical roads. Evacuation of agricultural production to commercial centers, access better schools and healthcare centers is therefore very difficult, in some instances it's impossible. Consequently, children study in undepictable conditions, and receive poor education. Many patients who need emergency treatments, often die on the way to the main hospitals because of distance and lack of practical roads. Families produce what they eat. When they have a chance to evacuate their good to the commercial centers, they end up making no profit, because of the high cost of transportation. Hence, building a school infrastructure and a healthcare center in a location that allows a larger gathering of population from those small isolated villages would mean improving access to better schools and commercial centers, reducing distance to access healthcare, thus improving their living conditions. Our social service and health program is structured around two units: Family Support Center: A walk-in, storefront social services facility that provides families in crisis with immediate access to professional social services including foster care prevention, domestic violence workshops, parenting skills classes, alcoholism, and drug abuse) and family planning. Healthy Village: To target the high prevalence of diarrhea and enteric infections in the community, this initiative promotes healthy sanitary and hygienic environment among children and parents through activities and workshops that focus on healthy behaviors and overall wellbeing. The program also promotes positive masculinity to reduce gender-based and domestic violence.

Mentorship, networking and leadership

Often, young children in rural areas don’t have role models (source of inspiration) Especially for young girls, early marriage is their only aspiration, often leading to premature deaths because of all underlying risk factors for maternal and child mortality. Our program is designed to support children, with extracurricular activities, to dream for a better future. For instance, giving them exposure to local champions (doctors, engineers, architects, economists, etc.) who can interact with them through our special curriculum, will enable them to start dreaming for a better life outside of their native area. Our extracurricular activities are an adaptation from the Harlem Children's Zone program. This component of our program oversees our extra-curricular activities, structured around three (3) units: Peacemakers STEM Center Center for vocational training Center for Higher Education and Career Support (CHECS) Contact us to learn more about this component

Rural Agricultural Cooperative

We believe that rural areas in Africa experience missed opportunities to develop agricultural activities, because of lack of organization and financial resources. Regrouping communities to work together and ensure effective selling of their products will help sustain the activities. Resources generated by the activities will help sustain the program in the long run and distribute revenue to members, while ensuring health coverage to their families. Moreover, production of rural cooperative will ensure food self-sufficiency for the community, while providing members with access to extended facilities for small credit, thereby encouraging entrepreneurship in the community.
